Today's events didn't go as planned. Had an emergency room visit, GPS mishaps, and U-turns, so we were not able to make our stop at the San Luis Valley Research Center or Table to Farm. We would still like to share some information about these 2 places with you.
The San Luis Valley Research Center
Based on research, the San Luis Valley Research Center were established in 1888 the same year the main station in Fort Collins was built. It had 200 acres of land near the Rio Grande River. In 1940 the San Luis Valley Potato Board of Control leased 160 acres to the research center. This was nine miles north of Monte Vista and established a demonstration farm. In 1950 San Luis Valley Potato Improvement Association bought the farm and donated it to Colorado State University in 1953. Their priorities are to innovate food systems, accelerate climate resiliency, and nurture human wellness and thriving communities.
Table to Farm
Table to Farm Compost is a subscription service that takes the local community’s food waste and turns it into compost that they then give back to their subscribers. Their mission is "to recycle food waste into compost and save the Earth.” Referencing their website, they are climate activists and carbon farmers, and they are working in La Plata County to divert waste from landfills, reduce methane emissions, and recycle organic materials such as food scraps and wood shavings into living soil. Table to Farm Compost partners with Savannah Tree Farm to help with the cost-share aspect of the business in order to grow their operations.
